About Body Lab
Body Lab is the educational layer of the Shapier ecosystem: it explains what happens in the body when you move, train, eat and recover. This page describes its mission, its place and its limits.
Body Lab explains what happens in the body when you move, train, eat and recover.
It is an educational product, built around structured explanations, three-dimensional anatomical models, animations and short videos. It can be read on the web and on Android, with the same content everywhere.
The mission
Understand before you act.
Most of the resources available say what to do. Far fewer explain why the body reacts the way it does. That difference is not cosmetic: someone who understands the mechanism behind a piece of advice can judge whether that advice concerns them, adapt it, or set it aside. Someone who only applies advice depends on the next piece of advice.
Body Lab therefore makes visible mechanisms that are ordinarily invisible: the way a muscle pulls on a bone, what sets off an adaptation, how a cell renews its fuel, what rest repairs.
Between three worlds
Three families of resource already deal with the body, each with a strength and a weakness.
- The academic anatomical atlas is precise and reliable, but hard to get into: it assumes a vocabulary and a context most readers do not have.
- The fitness library is practical and directly applicable, but often thin on explanation: it says what to do without saying why.
- General health media are broad and readable, but rarely interactive and sometimes loose on mechanisms.
Body Lab occupies the space between the three: the rigour of the atlas, the readability of the media, the practical grounding of the library, with interactivity on top. Every mechanism is explained, shown, then linked to the matching practical action where one exists.
Body Lab, Shapier and Dash
The ecosystem separates three roles, and that separation is deliberate.
- Body Lab answers the question "why". It explains the body, movements and mechanisms.
- Shapier answers the question "what". It offers exercises, foods and practical strategies.
- Dash Shapier answers the question "what next". It lets you plan, record, measure and adjust.
Body Lab has to be useful on its own. It is not a satellite site built to create links towards Shapier: you can read the entire corpus without ever opening another app. When a link to Shapier appears, it is contextual, it describes the action it triggers, and it stays optional. Body Lab never copies Shapier's exercise or food catalogues.
A single source of content
The website and the mobile apps display exactly the same document. There is no short version for the phone and long version for the web: a page is written once, checked once, then rendered everywhere.
That choice has a visible consequence. A page has to stay understandable even if the three-dimensional scene does not load, if the video does not start or if the network is slow. The text carries the explanation; rich media illustrate it without ever replacing it.
What Body Lab does not do
Some absences are choices, not gaps waiting to be filled.
- No diagnosis, no symptom analysis.
- No treatment recommendation and no personalised rehabilitation.
- No tracking of meals, training, weight or body measurements.
- No copy of Shapier's exercise or food catalogues.
- No social network, no public comments, no user-published content.
- No personalised body avatar, no 3D scan, no augmented reality.
- No compulsory sign-in to read.
- No behavioural advertising, no collection of health data.
Caution
Educational, not medical
Body Lab describes a general physiology and a reference anatomy. It never passes judgement on an individual situation and in no way replaces the advice of a healthcare professional.
Pain, a symptom, a known condition or ongoing treatment change how everything written here should be read. In those situations, professional advice takes precedence over the content of this site.
How to check what we write
Three pages let you check all of the above: the methodology describes the editorial chain and the levels of certainty, the sources page explains how references are chosen and cited, and the editorial team page sets out who writes, with what verification method and what declarations of interest.
The privacy page completes the set by describing what the app stores, where, and how to erase all of it.
