The skin

The largest organ of the body, and the only one you see in full. It closes the organism, informs it, and above all it sheds a heat that without it would make any prolonged effort impossible.

The only organ you see in full

The skin is the largest organ of the body, and the only one you see in its entirety. Perhaps that is why it is credited mainly with a role in appearance, when its functions are mechanical, sensory and thermal.
It is built in three stacked layers, each with a distinct role.

It is in the dermis that everything relevant to this corpus sits: the vessels that set temperature, the glands producing sweat, and the receptors whose contribution to perceiving movement the proprioception page notes.

A barrier in both directions

The epidermis holds in as much as it protects. Its most superficial layer is made of dead, waterproofed cells, and that is what stops the body's water from evaporating continuously.
The function is noticed mostly when it is missing: an extensive burn endangers life mainly through the water loss it causes, ahead of any other mechanism.

What the muscle produces, and what has to be shed

Here is the function this corpus assumed without ever describing.
A working muscle produces heat — far more of it than mechanical work. The aerobic system page describes a pathway oxidising fuels; most of the energy released leaves as heat, and that heat has to get out.

    It is the change of state of that water that actually removes heat. Sweat that runs off removes almost none.
That last point deserves emphasis. It is not sweat that cools you, it is its evaporation. Sweat streaming off without evaporating is a water loss with no thermal benefit — which explains why humid air makes the same effort markedly harder.

The conflict this creates

Skin and muscle ask for the same thing at the same moment: blood flow.
The blood and circulation page describes a redistribution towards the working muscles during effort. In hot weather the skin claims its share at the same time, and the heart has to supply both.

Why heat changes everything
That sharing explains an ordinary observation: the same pace feels much harder in hot weather, and heart rate is higher there at equal effort.
Water loss adds to it. The hydration page describes a reduced plasma volume forcing the heart to beat faster; sweating is what reduces it. The two mechanisms add up rather than cancel out.
